The American Red Cross is mandated by congress to provide prompt relief
to victims of disaster. Disaster victims include those involved in fires,
floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, or hazardous materials accidents. The Red Cross
has over twenty different functional areas designed to support and provide
disaster response efforts. Red Cross assistance is geared toward meeting these
immediate emergency needs. The Red Cross enables victims of disasters to resume
living independently by providing the means for them to pay for what they need
most: food, clothing, shelter, and medicine.
In the event of a large scale disaster, Red Cross assistance also includes
the setting up of shelters where the work of feeding shelter residents and
emergency workers is done, along with referrals to other agencies.
